It was a privilege to paint covers for books by Joyce Carol Oates. I painted several, but I think this cover is the best. The model for this heroine had a strange beauty, typical of the character described. Since the model was blonde I painted her hair black to fit the heroine’s description. I also used this model to act out the roll of other female characters. Painting the vast expanse of sky, clouds and landscape created a grand spatial effect much like I enjoyed seeing in the large paintings by the old Italian master Tiepolo.
