Painting the character of the man's head with his ominous expression, contrasted well behind the light colors of the young girl. The background of the Bowery in lower Manhattan is symbolic and also fits nicely into the design of the shade of the man's massive head. Occasionally for design, the larger background of white canvas is left as is.
