When I first painted this illustration, the viewer’s who saw it liked the way I painted the teeming lower East Side of Manhattan at the end of the nineteenth century. I also painted the famous West Side building, ‘the Dakota,’ built in that same historical period. The woman on the back, somewhat more pronounced, represents the immigrant from whom the family originates. On the front cover there are the generations of this publishing family shown having made their fortune, ending with the heroine as the central figure.
