In this novel a family overcomes the narrow-mindedness of a community in 19th century northern England. Dressed modestly in Victorian clothes, the hero and heroine maintain their dignity and admirable values despite hardships endured. Compositionally the lights and shade are arranged to direct the viewer's eye. The manor house is in the shade so as not to draw attention away from the couple, while the trees behind the couple project their light faces.
